Surface 3 June 23rd firmware updated killed Microusb port data?

Microsoft rolled out a Surface 3 update that fixed and improved all the follwing:

  • Surface System Aggregator Firmware update (v1.0.49500.0) improves the experience while using the Surface Cover.
  • Audio Device driver update (v603.9600.2563.61816) enhances audio performance and improves the audio experience on Surface 3.
  • Surface Pen Settings driver update (v4.0.112.1) enables new functionality with the Surface app, available for free in the Windows Store.
  • Camera driver update (v20.9600.3444.120) enhances the image and video quality while using camera.
  • HD Graphics driver update (v10.18.14.4175) improves the display stability and graphics performance.
  • Wireless Network Controller and Bluetooth driver update (v15.68.3091.193) improves the system stability and the Wi-Fi connectivity experience, also increases the network download performance.

What they failed to mentioned is the microusb port would loose its handy ability to transfer data. I was surprised to see, that after this update I couldn’t use anything on the port anymore with 3 different microusb to full size adapters or OTG cables people call them. It’s now just a port plug for charging only. Real shame, It was good to have the microusb port for my mouse and still have the USB 3 port open for my USB memory stick file transfers.

Was this planned Microsoft? Or is my unit faulty? There has to be a reason for this, was it to improve the charging issues people have been experiencing?

  1. @chris my surface 3 with feb 2016 firmware updates windows 10 allows data transfer through micro usb. However the keyboard needs to be woken up by pressing any key everytime. Even the software keyboard does this.. not sure if there is any settings to tweak it. Even the @ and ” keys on keyboard is swapped while pressing shift key. Did you have the same problem?

    • Update: manage to fix the keyboard issue by selecting US international keyboard input instead of Uk.

But i still have problems with chrome browser as the onscreen keyboard doesn’t automatically pop up. But it works well with edge, so must be a chrome issue!

Not having google map, google+, youtube and vine app on windows store is a bummer.

Also the Samsung tab s 10.5 screen is far brighter and vivid compared to the surface 3 🙂

  2. is this issue of micro usb OTG is fixed with with win 10 update? It is a shame if it doesn’t offer data transfer option. I think it is a deliberate attempt from Microsoft and hope they fixed the bluetooth issue!
