GPD Pocket Review Online – 7 Inches Of Compromises

The GPD Pocket is one of those devices that has me asking, but who is this for? Who would really use this daily and as their laptop? Well, there are those out there that do want a device like this. The backers of the crowdfunding project, maybe they are IT admins after a full Windows 10 laptop as small as possible and a pocketable once at that.

7-inches and full of compromises as to be expected, the screen is tiny and hard to use touch on. The keyboard is cramped and very awkward at times to type on trying not to hit the wrong keys or hit that split space bar correctly. There are also some design choices I don’t understand, the decision to drop a front webcam on this. So Skype and other voice chat are out of the question without an external webcam as large as the Pocket itself almost.

It’s not all bad, the build quality is great a huge step up from the GPD Win. Fully metal build, it has a fan and cooling pipe inside liek you’ll find on a big laptop. As a result of the Atom X7 Z8750 never throttles. 128GB of eMMC storage and 8GB of RAM are also great additions. Even if the RAM is clocked down to 1066Mhz instead of 1600Mhz. The type-c port is great to have on such a small device, proper USB 3.1 spec with display out, charging and data at USB 3.0 speeds.

End of the day you need to ask yourself, would I really use such a small device and do I really need it?

  1. I’ve just bought one at a sale reduction to USD 455 on GPD’s Aliexpress site, after weighing it up for all of this time. Most places I go to will have an HDMI screen to plug into, and a BOW HB099 bluetooth folding (down to pretty much the same footprint as this PC) keyboard and touchpad overcomes the keyboard limitation. It’s the most compact combination of battery life, processor power and other desirable and quality features like fast charging and Gorilla Glass that there is, I think. Gearbest’s page still gives the screen resolution as 1080, everywhere else says it’s 1920 x 1200. Were earlier examples really 1080 or is it a Gearbest typo?

… very positive impressions on the Pocket running Linux, with some hints on how to install the OS and use devices like USB antennas, the Ubertooth One (an open source 2.4 GHz wireless development platform for Bluetooth experimentation) and various SDR interfaces (radio systems implemented in software instead of hardware)

  3. I would not buy the GPD either. But i did buy indeed just a few things roughly like this for ultralight foto backup purposes on the road: The lightest Windows tablet I could find (a dirt cheap Teclast X80 Pro) with a halveway decent 8 inch screen (A TV screen would work too since it has HDMI out). I do not intend to use the touchscreen and therefore added a (strange keys) Bluetooth lightweight keyboard and a Bluetooth mouse. Still only a little more than 500g.
