A couple days back we reported that Lenovo was apparently going to launch a new high-end handset very soon but we still didn’t have any official confirmation. Well, that changes today as the company just announced it over on Chinese social Weibo, saying that the Lenovo Z5s will be coming in December.
The Lenovo Z5s was expected to pack a next gen Qualcomm Snapdragon CPU, but given that Qualcomm is actually unveiling the new SoC on December 4th, we somehow doubt the Chinese phone maker was able to equip it into the phone. Of course, everything is possible and maybe Lenovo closed a great deal with Qualcomm to be the first to pack the new chipset, but given Lenovo’s reputation – remember the Lenovo Z5 pre-launch claims? – we can’t really take those rumors seriously.
CPU aside, the Z5s is definitely going to be a Huawei P20 Pro look-alike design wise, as we’ve already seen the handset when it got certified in China (image above), it’ll indeed have three rear cameras placed vertically in a 2 and 1 configuration with the LED flash below (just like Huawei’s phone). The phone will then sport a 6.3-inch display, be 156.7 × 74.5 × 7.8mm in size, pack a tiny 3210mAh capacity battery and run ZUI OS based on Android Oreo (?).
What’s different from any other phone currently on the market is the design of the front though. The Lenovo Z5s will in fact be one of the first devices with a cut out camera hole on the top display – this or the Huawei Nova 4, which could look better than the 2018’s trending top notch, but your mileage may vary.
Finally, Lenovo launched a little survey over on Weibo asking their followers what they think the “S” in Z5S stands for, options go from Speed and Super to Strong and Sexy. Whether it’ll be any of that we will know very soon, for now all we hope is they keep their promise and bring top notch hardware at a relatively low price.
