MediaTek Helio P90 is Official: Everything You Need to Know

MediaTek Helio P90 is Official

A week after the unveiling of the flagship Snapdragon 855 by Qualcomm, Taiwanese semiconductor MediaTek just announced their newborn chip, albeit it’s only for the mid-range segment.

The MediaTek Helio P90 is indeed far from being a flagship SoC, nevertheless it can become a CPU we could see packed in many sub $250 phones in the near future.

According to MediaTek, the P90 is a great step forward compared to its predecessor, the Helio P70, at least as far as AI processing is compared. The new APU 2.0 we find on the new chipset is indeed up to four times more powerful, using a leading fusion AI architecture to run multiple complex AI tasks at the same time. In raw numbers it can generate 1127GMACs (giga multiply-accumulates per second), a metric used to calculate the DSP (digital signal processor) performance of a CPU.

The more powerful SoC then supports 48MP cameras, 8k video capturing at 30fps and is compatible with up to 24MP+16MP dual camera setups. Additionally it can show bokeh effect in real time, allow for hardware image stabilization, record videos at 480fps and quickly reduce noise in images.

Through the new APU 2.0 it’s also possible to take advantage of AI features to track and analyze actions and poses of multiple people in real-time, this can be used to create full body avatars, 3D pose tracking, multiple object and scene identification, AR/MR acceleration and – of course – to unlock the smartphone quickly and safely.

Connectivity wise, the MediaTek Helio P90 supports Dual 4G SIM, VoLTE and ViLTE with an advanced IMS used by more than 150 cellular operators world-wide. There’s no 5G support, but we really didn’t expect it to find on a mid-range chip.

As far as the hardware is concerned, the P90 is an octa-core CPU based on a 12nm manufacturing process and is comprised of two ARM Cortex-A75 at 2.2GHz and six ARM Cortex-A55 at 2.0GHz, so we expect the two more powerful cores to kick in only under heavy load. The CPU is then paired with an IMG PowerVR GM 9446 GPU that can go to up to 970MHz, it supports Dual Channel LPDDR4x memory at up to 8GB 1866MHz and UFS 2.1 storage.

  1. Good to know there is a P90 coming, thus we haven’t seen the P40 yet

  2. Funny everyone using the “AI” marketing buzzword now. But what is it really?
GMACs look to me to be just mathmatic calculations. Nothing new there, just faster.
“AI” software such as human speech recognition already runs on the $35 quad-core Raspberry Pi 3 and other cheap single-board-computers.
