Teclast Tease Details Of New 11.6″ Atom X7 Z8700 8GB Tablet

From Teclast’s Weibo today. They are working on a new 11.6″ 1920 x 1080 Atom X7 Z8700 tablet, with 8GB of dual channel Ram and active stylus support. No further details. But I can see it looks similar to the Teclast X16 Pro in terms of styling and it does have a keyboard dock, maybe the same keyboard as the X2 Pro I reviewed?

They will be the first Chinese tablet manufacturer to release an 8GB tablet and the first to use the X7 Z8700 which is the same chipset the Surface 3 uses.

  1. For use as a notebook more than a tablet, what do people think about 13″ screen size? Not necessary? Seems like so many 10-11″ devices but not much closer to a full size (15″) notebook. thoughts? I personally would rather have a 13″ device with weight above 1 kilogram but still well lighter than a full sized notebook.

    • I love the 3:2 12″ screen on the Surface. But found I use it more as a notebook, 12 inches as a tablet is nice, but a bit heavy after a while, still at least the kickstand helps that issue. Which is why I think all tablets over 10″ should have kickstands.

  2. Have to wait to see how good this product is. It seems to me that the whole issue with buying many Chinese products is the disappointing customer experience they often deliver. Apple and other premium brand products are made in China but the exacting product standards demanded of Foxconn and also the stringent QC process they perform prior to releasing a product to the market, is streets ahead of Chuwi, Teclast, Cube and so on. Worth noting that a couple of the smartphone brands are catching up rapidly e.g Xiaomi.

Up to now, Chinese tablet pc brands do not really focus on the customer experience, but rather on a race to max out the specs of their devices. A high PPI, a fast cherry trail processor, 4GB RAM etc doesn’t mean much if the software is not well-integrated with the hardware and the device doesn’t really deliver the experience one expects as a customer. We used to direct similar criticism at the Korean electronics and motor industries but look at them now. The Chinese are evolving and who knows what the retail pc/tablet industry will look like in five years time – very different to this, of that i’m sure. These are Interesting times. In the meantime, i’m biding my time waiting for a Teclast X98 Plus (hopefully dual OS) that doesn’t overheat.

  3. Is it possible to run Android on a Atom x7?

    • Yes, it is. There is Android on the X5 (Teclast X98 Pro) and the X7 is the same chip, just clocked a bit higher.

  4. If this tablet can fix all of the cons of all the previous teclast hybrids (overheating) than this tablet will seriously be a contender to the surface 3 (maybe even surface pro 2 and base model surface pro 3). Either way I’m really looking forward to super efficient processor and the 8gb of ram.

  5. Put it in the X98 body, with the 9.7″ retina screen, USB-C port, and Wacom support. I would pay $300 for it. I would be willing to pay $350-400 if Teclast was the kind of company that exercised any form of Quality control.

  6. And also good for frying eggs 🙂

  7. I’m afraid to imagine what will be temperature and throttling under load 🙂

    • Surface 3 X7 Z8700 maxed at around 78 degrees (Good) As long as Teclast use some copper in there and the whole metal housing as a large heat sink (like the Surface 3) it should be fine. We’ll have to wait and see. But I hope they do this…

  8. At this point, I just want it to not overheat.

  9. I hope it has a fully laminated screen with tempered glass, 2 x USB 3 full sized ports, 11000 maH battery and dual band wireless. And all for $270. Dreams are free 🙂

    • @Chris, tangential question… Do you know if these new CherryTrail Windows devices usually ship with the 64bit version Windows 10 *and* a 64bit UEFI bios? I’m guessing yes. What I’m getting at is the ability to boot up a 64bit OS (or installer) via connected USB drive. I’ve seen in older models, often the 2GB/32GB versions (vs 4/64), that com with a 32bit UEFI BIOS which often presents a problem for installing or reinstalling a 64bit OS.

      • Should do, but I just received the Onda v820w CH (X5 Z8300) and for some reason it’s running 32bit and not 64bit which the CPU supports. Looks like Onda used a 32bit UEFI.

        • @Chris, The Onda v820w CH has 32GB storage right? Often they use 32bit on the 32GB models because is uses significantly less disk space than the 64bit OS. So that makes some sense. I don’t *think* but am not sure, that 32bit does not suffer a whole lot from performance versus 64bit… so… it might actually be a logical choice, perhaps even for 64GB storage devices. That said, I wish they would use a BIOS that allows booting of either 32bit or 64bit UEFI booting. For example, if you are using separate external USB/SD cards of 64GB or 128GB with some flavor of Linux.

          • That explains it, because the 32bit OS uses less room, good point!

          • @Chris Not just more free space but the fact that minimum RAM requirements were and always are higher for x64 versions (2GB RAM) of any Windows compared to x86 (1GB) alternatives. You can check

            here: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/windows-10-specifications

I wish all those companies used some lite versions of Windows 8.1/10 without all that bloat of useless services and such. For example now i am using lite version of 8.1 which after restart took me around 350MB RAM which will make huge difference @ 2GB RAM devices..

      • While the limit for Windows 32bit version is 4GB of memory, usually it can only utilize a lower amount, around 3.25GB. Its capped by the OS, and while there is a way to bypass this it causes OS instability, so if the tablet has 4GB of ram or more it should have the 64bits version.

    • *Ahem* 4G LTE-A, chargeable microUSB ports and discrete 2.5 power pin. MicroHDMI.
