Just when you thought the Chinese 9.7-inch retina tablets where all but gone and dead. Voyo is back with one and this is still a decent screen, the 9.7″ 4:3 ratio 1536 x 2048 “retina” screen. It looks to be fully laminated with 2.5D glass in a thin 8.5mm shell. The tablet is called the Voyo i8 and is powered by now all too common Chinese tablet/mobile chipset the Helio X27. So it will make calls, dual SIM 4G but it doesn’t have all the common EU bands like band 20 which isn’t great but it has at least band 1, 7 and 3 LTE which many EU countries use.
Voyo also did the wise thing and went with 4GB of RAM, the Helio X27 with 3GB in my experience can be quite laggy even in just the UI if poorly optimised. But with 4GB as seen in the Teclast T20 and others, it runs much smoother. There is 64GB of eMMC 4.5 storage and the usual Wireless AC with BT 4.2 the Helio X27 supports. MicroSD support and 3.5mm headphone jack, pretty straightforward specs.
It runs Android 8.0 and the battery is 6000mah, which should be good for over 7 hours.
Yet again no type-C like the Alldocube M8 and no HDMI out. GPS seems to be missing also which is odd as the chipset would have this integrated unless it’s disabled due to lack of antenna hardware.
I think I have seen already enough of the Helio X27, while it offers a lot for the price the older MTK8176 without 4G performs better. The best part is this tablet will sell for $159 which isn’t bad considering what’s on offer and for those still longing for more 4:3 Android tablets. Still, I have like to see them using the better Helio X30 (faster GPU) or even the newer Helio P60. Those chips will come next year I imagine.
Do you want to see a review? Or put that money towards something a bit newer and not so old hat?
