Xiaomi Mi Drone 4k Version, Review Coming!

Xiaomi Mi Drone 4k Version, Review Coming!

Since my Xiaomi reviews always tend to get a lot of interested and the Mi Scooter review has had a much better response than expected. I’ve pulled the trigger on the Mi Drone. I’ve been looking at it for some time, put off by the 1080p only version and heard that this one is the best of the two drones from Xiaomi which does 1440p 60fps and 4k 30fps.

I’ve been eyeing up the DJI Spark since hearing about it but ultimately put off by the fact it’s just 1080p only (I love 4k) and for less, I can get the 4k version of the Xiaomi one. The DJI spark is 599 euros here, but of course, has a lot of features, more sensors, collision avoidance is one of the more important features I was after. Something the Xiaomi Drone doesn’t have sadly, so I’ll have to be very careful where I fly it. Not take it into areas around trees etc. And as you no doubt know I prefer to review the cheaper Chinese brands & alternatives. DJI drone stuff also has thousands of reviews and videos so my review would just get lost in the sea of videos.

At least it does have auto hover!

I’m really new to drones, but something I want to get into for a while and would love some aerial shots of the area’s around where I live. The price of the Mi Drone 4k version is around $550 to $670 online and after a lot of hunting around I found this coupon MI4K with Gearbest that lowers the price to $469 with shipping. I think the price is fair considering it’s the 4k version and I’m not about to fork out a huge amount to get the DJI Phantom 4 which is over twice the price as I’m just getting into drones. And I’ll be using beginner mode and settings.

The gimbal and camera which can shot up to 4k 30fps.

It’s only just been ordered so look for the review or unboxing and test flight video in a few weeks.

  1. Did you also checked Yuneec Breeze? They are also cheaper than DJIs and I enjoyed on YT the videos shot with that drone.

  2. Now starting with drones also? Fantastic! ;-D

If you have time and budget, try Hubsan H501S or H501A drones… probably the best cost / functionality drones available in the market for less than 250€.

    • Yes, well maybe I’ll start on drones 🙂 Change is good now and then. Those drones look okay but no 4k video, no gimbal. More a racing style? I’m just starting with this one as I want to get some pretty smooth gimbal 4k shots of Denia and around the areas I live. But if I plan to review more I might take a look at them. Just $$$ so getting them might be an issue. Would also love to compare the DJI Spark to the Xiaomi 4k drone. If only DJI will send me a loan unit.

      • Hubsan drones are quite common. They have nothing special but are cheap and have lot of features… FPV integrated on remote control, follow me mode, circle mode, on screen telemetry, 1080p video (without gimball)… and good battery autonomy (around 20m) and a long range (more than 1km) but for one fourth or less than a DJI and half than Xiaomi. However Xiaomi and DJI play in another league! 😉
Now that there are not a lot of people in Denia, try to fly above the castle… and be careful with police. There should not tell you anything since there is no people there these days, but perhaps you should ask for perms at Ayuntament. 😉 If not, flying above the port could be OK. 😀

        • The sound okay for the price. I want to fly around the castle but I know it’s just too high risk, the police would be onto me even if the law states not to people etc. I’ll try more remote like Las Rotas (The coast) and the port. I’ve seen drones fly over my house a few times so I know someone is flying out of visibility here but is not like people will do anything. The issue with my house is a lot of trees and cables. But I want to do a flight around my house bird’s eye view and look at the Montgo.

          • Hmm… you could get the road to Montgo, stop at the end near the Ermita and climb with the drone to Cova del Agua or to the top of Montgo. It must be a great view.
The only concern would be if you have enough video coverage and, of course, the wind. 😉

            • Near Padre Pere? I’ll try there, I don’t live far from that area. Maybe try from my house. But I must first practice landing in a small space, how it handles etc before committing to anything big.

The issue is in a public place too many people come and look, later it will draw the police, asking questions. But I’m more worried about the wind that comes down from the Montgo can be very strong.

              • Yes, near Padre Pere!
Don´t worry about your pilot skills, Chris. In GPS assisted mode it’s very difficult to crash your drone. In manual mode, it’s different. Anyway, I saw a review where told that Mi Drone is limited in height and distance for the first 5 hours in order to avoid accidents. 😉
In two weeks I’ll be there with my Hubsan. So, I will give a try to my drone… but first I’ve to bypass the 250m altitude firmware limit in order to reach the top.

          • I have my drone review up now: https://techtablets.com/2017/06/xiaomi-mi-drone-4k-review-unboxing-2017-4k-model/ So you’re going to bypass the 250m altitude limit? In Spain, it’s 120m the limit we can go to legally I read.

  3. Great stuff, looking forward to this one especially!

Your reviews are great Chris! ?

    • Not sure if my drone review will be good as I’ve, never reviewed a drone or a flown one as big haha. Be a big learning curve for me.

      • Just a challenge as all the others you did, just of a different kind
They have a lot of chinese stuff inside so it fits to the channel as an extension from time to time cause most gadget guys here will come to a point no longer to be able to resist.

These are beginners like you so they may trust you more than all the semi professional or pro channels.

If I’d ask you what tablet /display I should use for a MiDrone I’m pretty sure your answer will be fiven … about 100€.
No other drone channel could do It that way cause they are using iphones and s8+ … but that may end in a crash when the first phone call rings while flying and panic starts what to do next.
I started with WLtoys Q393a – cheap 10 min. FPV copter with 10 min. Flighttime, great remote , and a camera you could up and down remotly – 95€ or so.
Then I bought a GPS drone from banggod for 142 € with circle and rth …
And now I followed you with a mi drone on sale and I have to buy a tablet for convenience but the fiveN tablet you recently reviewed has just one unmentioned flaw for this purpose: no gps

If you fly higher noise is less therefore less people especially winds reduces noise and attraction
