Xiaomi Mi Notebook Air Core i7 8550U Ultimate Model With 16GB RAM

Xiaomi Mi Notebook Air Core i7 8550U Ultimate Model With 16GB RAM

Update: Well, it turns out it is a new 15.6″ model. I guessed it, but that wasn’t hard. More info here: Mi Notebook Pro 15.6″ Notebook.

We know that Xiaomi has the Core i7 U CPU’s in latest years 2016 model, but we haven’t seen this year’s i7 7500U release yet. Well, these Geekbench 4 benchmarks popped up showing that this year’s refreshed i7 model (Timi TM1701) might use the new Kaby Lake R Core i7 8550U CPU with a maximum turbo of 4.0Ghz and it’s a quad core with a max TDP of 25W like i5 7200U model I reviewed this year.  It will probably be named the Mi Notebook Air 13 Ultimate Edition or a new Mi Notebook Air 15 inch edition?

It’s also great to see that model will also run 16GB of RAM and hopefully in dual channel as the i5 7200U model was only running in single channel. As it stands those Geekbench 4 scores show the CPU is much more capable than the i5 7200U which gets only 3645 single core score and 7031 multi core.  Which means for multi threaded tasks the new Core i7 8550U should be twice as fast!

I wonder if this new i7 model will also feature improved cooling, maybe a design and more copper heat transfer pipes?

The rest of the laptop should remain the same. Nvidia MX150 GPU with 2GB of DDR5 RAM, 1080p IPS 13.3″ screen. 2 x USB 3.0 ports, USB 3.1 Gen2. 39Wh battery and NVMe PCI-E SSD with spare SATA3 2280 slot. Fingerprint reader, Intel Wireless AC 8265 2×2 antenna setup and that full metal design with a backlit keyboard.

You can see my review of the i5 7200U model here which is currently selling for $836 with coupon MiAir13NEW

Thanks Lania for the tip.

Then again the Timi TM1701 could be a new 15.6″ Xiaomi Mi Notebook Air 15? I would love to see a 15.6″ model.

  1. O.T. Hey Chris, will you try the new released Xiaomi Mi Notebook Pro? I’m very happy to see a 15.6″ screen, 8th generation Intel processors with the powerful MX150, 2xUSB 3.0, 2x Type-C, HDMI out and SD card reader in only 1.95 kilos!

  2. Hey Chris! Thank you for your reviews and hands-on. I wanted to ask you… Do you think it is likely that this Xiaomi, or other Xiaomis in a close future, to have a 2k screen. I mean, for photo and video editing, the Xiaomi seems to have lots of ram, a strong cpu, and even a graphic card but it falls behind in terms of screen resolution. Also, in a lot of pictures (your or otherwise), the screen light of the Xiaomi seems to be weak. How many lits does it have and is it much compared to other high-end non-chinese laptops? Thanks! All the best! M.

  3. Too bad : no AZERTY keyboard in sight again. You, english speakers, don’t know how lucky you are. Even if we, french, would use stickers, we’d lose backlit keys if any.

    • Oh, we do know how lucky we are no need for stickers. I’m even luckier as New Zealand uses the US layout the Chinese use, not the UK layout (Minor differences between US and UK keyboards)

    • You should know the pain, when we, in the Netherlands get a computer with AZERTY, because it was imported from France.

  4. Sure Chris, you very welcome, glad that you like my information, about this new version that I stumpled upon and listed you’ its geekbench speedmargins in the other thread as a admin notice-…
here is the values if other wanne grasp the values in details..
    https://browser.geekbench.com/v4/cpu/3736680
    https://browser.geekbench.com/v4/compute/1027651
though 4 cores, 8550U-label, 8MB L3 cache’ certainly potent fellow.. will be interesting to see, where it land pricewise, ewen thow the MX150 starting to look questionable amongst that CPU.

    • It looks like they are running the 8550U pretty hard.
      http://browser.geekbench.com/v4/cpu/search?dir=desc&q=8550U&sort=multicore_score
as its top the charts nr1 for that chipset and quite significantly from the main average there seems to land around 12.000 for the few other laptops packing 8550U. (but dGPU MX150 seem to be main choice for other vendors on 8550U, ewen thow the other laptops MX150 comes in a decent amount higher and 45.5k, but there 8550U Geek4 multiscore-margins is way lover, so can be some appetit testscores from Xiaomi where they 8550U shows of its potential, or perhaps Xiaomi once again says “to hell with the concept of throoling’down, thats an Apple’show, we like heat and get the full effect” :-).
certainly looks promissing and yeah, it gets hot, Mi air Skylake (also got one) also clims up around 53degrees on keyboard when gaming, but Im also impressive the benchscores it delivers, overall Impressed with mine and how well it run a game like GTA5 on FHD and some of the sett on high and very high..
Tryed the new 2017bench from Unigine Superposition (release apr. 17)

  5. Nice specs but I really hope the improved the cooling system because the older model was really terrible, it ran hot and very loud and for $800 + there are better choces from Acer,Asus and HP that are much better in my opinion.
One of the benefits of buying these alternatives from China is the cheaper price and I just don’t see the value here unless the weakness of the original model was fixed.

  6. Great! Finally a 16 GB version and a lot of power for this Xiaomi Mi Air! Btw, Chris pointed out in his review of i5-7200U + MX150 version that thermals with this hardware are not the greatest (scorching hot keyboard while pushed hardly!), so it will be interesting to see how Xiaomi will resolve the thermal problem with so performing hardware! Thank you for your awesome reviews, Chris!

  7. No thunderbolt? Any chinese laptops on horizon with quad core and thunderbolt? Mx150 on the go and thunderbolt gpu at home would be perfect setup for me.

    • None I know of this is still using USB 3.1 Gen2 and not 4 lane PCIe thunderbolt which would be great.

  8. Most testing shows the new CPU about 50% faster than the old one. That’s quite nice! Gonna be some machine.

  9. Any ideas of release dates of this model? I’ve been waiting for the i7 version sooo long, there’s why they delayed this model… Looks awesome

    • I would say by the looks of it, it should be coming in the next 2 months at least. I might pick one up for review at least. Nice boost in power from that i7 8550U. I was also more keen on reviewing the i7 7500U model over the i5 7200U but of course, it was never released, now we know why! Would also love to see a 15.6″ Mi Notebook Air release.

  10. Wow! these specs look really awesome!
hopefully this new one will cause the price of the older version to plummet so that i can finally afford it.

    • The old version already has dropped, now selling for around $660 USD

      • yes and you can blame the price, as i recall the old skylake v2 with newer PM961 and sharp IPS panels have been as low as 616USD from Gearbest for a brief moment-.
when you summon blazing fast NVme drive, double m.2 slots and dGPU and not least 8GB DDR4 and overall very high quality from such pricelevel.
Its quite a bargain imo, the main problem is custom here in EU there can tumble the show a lot.

        • Yes, a bargain for what you get. I find if it’s the slow free mail option it should arrive without any extra fees from customs.
