Honor MagicBook Ryzen 5 2500U Version $699 14″ Laptop

Honor MagicBook Ryzen 5 2500U Version $699 14″ Laptop

Thanks to those that pointed this one out to me, the Huawei Honor MagicBook has been out for some time with the Intel 8th Gen Core chips. But there is also this cheaper $699 version that has the Ryzen 5 2500U octa-core chipset in it with Vega 8 integrated GPU. It has 8GB of DDR4 2400Mhz RAM, 256GB SSD, wireless AC 2×2 like the base M iNotebook Pro I have, but this is around $200 cheaper and it’s smaller too at 14 inches with a 1920 x 1080 IPS panel with a touchscreen option for an additional $200.

It runs Windows 10 Home, has 4 speakers are a 57Wh battery which is actually quite a good size for a 14″ laptop and if you take into consideration the 15.6″ Mi Notebook Pro has a 60Wh battery. For ports, it has HDMI 1.4 (Shame it’s not HDMI 2.0 spec)  a USB 3.0 port and USB 2.0. SD card reader. It weighs 1.45 kilos and is 15.8mm thick. And like the Mi Notebook Pro it does come with a backlit keyboard. My only real concern is the cooling, just one fan so hopefully, it will not throttle when both CPU and GPU are pushed.

Overall it looks like a nice, cheaper option to the Mi Notebook Pro and but note the Radeon Vega 8 is around 20-30% if not more, slower than the Nvidia MX150. I’ve had about 4-5 requests to review this one. What do you think? Be nice to test an AMD chip for a change!

  1. Even though I like AMD and hope they can bring Intel competition. I think the Ryzen’s make more sense in the high TDP desktop processor machines. If a Ryzen notebook does not outperform a similarly priced Intel notebook by a significant amount, in either processing performance or battery life, then it doesn’t make sense. I’m also not sure if Linux runs perfectly on it (yet).

  2. I took a look at a tear down of the MagicBook Intel variant, and you can swap out the WIFI card. That alone makes this device more valuable to me than even the Matebook Pro.

  3. I’d love to see a review of this one

  4. IMO there is no point reviewing this notebook.

I was interested in a 2200u/2500u notebook as well and the performance varies too much between devices depending on their thermal solutions. No offence to huawei but this notebook looks to me to be more form over function as well.

considering the limited time you have i would rather see a tablet or mobile review

    • they market a ”canyon effect cooling”. Does that count? lol

      • ”canyon effect cooling” lol translation went wrong there!

    • Well if I can’t get a discount from one of the retailers I doubt I will review it. Some of them can knock off a bit on the price if I use their link.

This HP is cheaper providing you can get someone to bring it over for you if you purchase it from the USA. It’s very cheap and even thought the screen is reportedly dim at about 250 nits I still recon it’s worth it if you have a way at getting it at that price.

    • but it has a much weaker CPU/GPU ryzen 3 and vega 4 but touch screen is good. shame I would have to import and get stung by taxes.

    • Superior cpu + full genuine office? I don’t know, sounds pretty good to me

      • I just wonder if that Office promo is Chinese only? I know the GPU isn’t superior but if I do get I’ll be sure to test it well. My last AMD was my desktop 1700 and it ran well for half the price of an Intel chip.

  6. wow I think this is a great deal for Europeans if they can avoid taxes

    • Yeah for sure but I heard also this one has a dim screen? Chris needs to review it.
