[Updated] Chuwi Hi8 Vs Chuwi Vi8 Ultimate – Which is better?

[Updated] Chuwi Hi8 Vs Chuwi Vi8 Ultimate – Which is better?

So I have the 4th Chuwi Vi8 model you could say, the Hi8 with it’s Vi8 Ultimate design, chipset and lack of HDMI. It has a very sharp (iPad Retina sharp) 1920 x 1200 screen that is brighter than the Chuwi Vi8 Ultimate.

Both have the exactly same design and specs, they have the horrible 0.3 MP VGA front facing cameras which are almost useless even in video chat. They both have lost the micro HDMI port the Vi8 dual boot had. Cutting cuts no doubt Chuwi have used an unknown “NCard” brand eMMC, it’s one of the slowest I’ve seen. Only 45mb/s read and 35mb/s write speeds. Not good, but it doesn’t seem to effect the speed of the tablets which seem quick enough and responsive so I’m a bit puzzled ?!?!

Transferring large files you will notice the difference in the slower eMMC but, only in Windows.

So it all comes down to the 16:10 screens, 1280 x 800 Vs 1920 x 1200, the impact in has on the GPU and battery.

Update 28th June: My full detailed Chuwi Hi8 Review is now up.

Update 23rd June: The Chuwi Vi8 screen is a dull 185 cd/m2 and the Hi8 screen is 354 cd/m2 – much brighter. However the screen on the Vi8 Ultimate has better view angles.

I also conducted a quick battery life test replicating heavy use – gaming with full brightness. My results are in this video here:

The Chuwi Vi8 Ultimate pros Vs the Hi8:

  • Faster 3D performance
  • Looks to have better battery life (I will confirm exact figures in the full review)
  • Runs a little cooler (screen puts out less heat? Less stress on the GPU)
  • Screen has better view angles.

The Chuwi Hi8 pros Vs the Vi8 Ultimate:

  • Very sharp looking screen, it’s sharp like an ipad retina display
  • The screen is much brighter @ 350 cd/m2 and colors look better due to this brightness.
  • 40 grams lighter, not sure why. It has to be the screen as the batteries are the same 14804 mWh size.

So it basically boils down to this, if you want games at native screen resolution to the fastest and have a better battery life, I would get the Vi8 Ultimate. But of course if you need HDMI get the Vi8 Super (Dual OS 2nd model) or take a look at the Cube iwork8 3G which has a bright 1280 x 800 screen and 3G.

And if you don’t game much and don’t mind a little less battery life and a bright, sharp screen is your thing, get the Hi8.

And these dual boot tablets are dirt cheap, $92.59 for the Chuwi Hi8 at gearbest.com and $92.26 for the Vi8 Ultimate at geekbuying.com. And if you want the hdmi port, the Z3735F Vi8 dual boot is only $85 here.

  1. I want buy tablet for use only windows and play pc games what’s better tablet for windows ?

  2. Can someone explain what is the difference between Vi8 Ultimate and Vi8 Super?

    • Sure the Super has a Z3735F 1.8Ghz Atom adn the Ultimate has a new design and a Z3736F 2.16Ghz Atom in it. The 1280 x 800 screen is the same, the 2GB of Ram and 32GB eMMC.

      • Thanks Chris. I killing my self in finding 8″ tablet with good screen resolution and good battery life. Hi8 was my favorite but looking at your reviews, other people comments and I don’t like that have problems with overheating. Vi8 Ultimate looks like better deal for me but there is “problem” with lover resolution. Can you help me decide what to choose (maybe some other model?)

  3. They didnt upgrade cameras on Hi8?

  4. Does it support wirless display sharing?

  5. Can i play FIFA(PC version) using gamepad in this tab or other windows tab?

  6. Hi, great comparison article. I amreally liking this Hi8 version of Chuwi tablet and I am planning to get myself one from Gearbest. Now if you had to settle for which would you prefer the Chuwi Hi8 or Cube iWork8 3G ?

    • Cube iWork8 3G only has 720p res as oppose to Chuwi being full 1080p for starters. Cube has more cell phone options though. I really want a dual boot tablet but heard about resets of Win 8.1 which have caused problems with the dual boot rendering the lose of Android. Once someone can confirm or deny this and or offer a solution then I will perhaps buy but until then ill keep reading various reviews and hold fire.

  7. hi,suggest me a good dual tablet under 130 dollar?????????????

  8. Hello Chris and thanks for the review. I heard somewhere that someone for some reason reset windows 8.1 and now 8.1 only loads, have you heard about this? Also from time to time I’d like to reset Android and start again but I’m worried if it messes up the Dual Boot option???

    Thanks

    • The subject is the same but the unit is different. A teclast X98X G 32 . Did somebody use the 8.1 refresh/reset possibilities, with what result? I read for different other win tablets diffferent resuilts. As I was heavily experimenting with programming and testing the results , I am considering to clean the whole unit. It is full of garbage, which I like to throw away.

  9. Thanks for the prompt review Chris! I’m quite pleased with the results as I won’t be gaming on this tablet, it will be primarily browsing and some light business. So as expected, less battery life, better screen, slower 3D due to resolution.

    Great job, thanks.

  10. Hi Chris,

I’m considering getting an 8″ windows tablet and I’m doubting between one of the Chuwi’s or the Teclast x80h. The Chuwi’s seem to be better overall but the build quality of the Teclast is a lot nicer. Which one would you recommend?

    Thank you!!

    • Hi, the Teclast build is better with it;s metal backing. But the Chuwi Hi8/Vi8 Ultimate build isn’t bad, it’s much improved over the first model. Now, I think I would go for the Hi8 as the screen is brighter, the X80h was a bit dull. And the Hi8 is only $93 shipped, the X80H is around 20-30 more.

      • Thanks for your answer Chris. I will wait for your review of the Hi8 then and see how is it its battery life, as is the only thing is not convincing me.

        • I’m conducting a quick battery life test now. Both tablets at 100% battery, 100% brightness looping Epic Citadel in the guided tour mode. I will check the battery life in an hour or so and see where they level of the battery is on both. Not really a fair test, but it’s to get an idea of just how much the higher and brighter screen will burn up the battery.

    • i would choose chuwi. Other options i dont consider because they are expensiv

  11. Just wondering, how much difference in battery life is there really ?

    • I haven’t got an exact figure yet as I need some time for that, but could be around 30 minutes less as that 1920 x 1200 screen seems to draw more power. I will have them set at the same brightness and see just how many watts difference there is.

  12. Hi Chris,

Thanks for your comparison. Can you tell us about the build quality and the screen? Is it laminate?

    Greetings

    • It’s not laminated, the build quality is quite good. Better than the original Chuwi Vi8, it feels more solid and less cheap with the metal strips around it.
