BMAX Y13 – Gemini Lake 8GB RAM, 13.3″ Yoga Style Laptop

BMAX Y13 – Gemini Lake 8GB RAM, 13.3″ Yoga Style Laptop

My review of the BMAX Y13 can be found here: https://techtablets.com/bmax-y13/review/

Finally something of interest again, this one popped up on Gearbest and looks promising. BMAX (Not a brand I’ve reviewed) has a laptop similar to the Teclast F5 but only bigger and with the important 8GB of DDR4 RAM. The Y13 it’s called and has a 13.3″ IPS panel with slim 5mm bezels on the sides and a 360-degree hinge! 10 touchpoint support and because it’s not mentioned it’s safe to assume the touchpanel glass is non-laminated. So it will have a gap hopefully only 1mm or less.

The chipset is the Gemini Lake Celeron N4100 2.4Ghz quad-core, Intel still hasn’t released a successor to this one. Storage is 256GB SSD and it l has a spare M.2 slot for easy expansion. The full-size backlit keyboard layout features full-sized arrow keys, but the power button is where the DEL key is.

It has Wireless AC but also BT 5.0 they mention so that can’t be the Wireless AC 3165 Intel chip as it has BT 4.1. Must be a newer 9000 series wireless card which is good. The press info mentions “Magic Speakers” whatever that means. Maybe just louder than normal. Overall it looks quite interesting apart from one big caveat. No full-sized USB. It has two USB Type-C ports. One is full spec, so power delivery, video, and data. D/C in, 3.5mm and MicroSD slot. At least one type-A USB port should be on the laptop. But it is thin and just 1.2 kilos!

I’m going to review this one.

I’m interested in battery life, thermals and hopefully unlocked bios for easy power limit tweaks. So look for a review of this one in a few weeks as I’ve got one ordered. It’s selling for $359 which is a bit pricey, but considering the Chuwi Lapbook Pro with the same RAM and chipset is about that now and this Y13 has a full spec type-C and touchscreen.

  1. Got my son the Y11. It’s amazing value. Can’t imagine a better laptop to pop in you bag for school or college.

Only, one problem – it won’t wake from sleep. Have to hold in the power button and force a full reboot.

Anyone have the same problem and know how to fix?

I’ve tried going into the properties for keyboard and mouse in device manager but the “Power Management” tab is missing

    • Hi, that sounds like a driver issue. Run the Intel driver support update and see if you can get the latest display driver for it. That should fix the issue. I had no such issue with my unit with stock and updated drivers. Yes, they are good little machines for light computing.

    • I’m having the same issue! Did you manage to fix it?
      Thanks

  2. Hi, can I charge the bmax using the usb port and a powerbank?

  3. No upcoming discount for Black Friday for this tablet?

  4. Such a shame it can’t be upgraded, we would be able to do a lot more with budget laptops. For the price, it seems to be a great deal though.

  5. It’s great to know that you approve this machine. I feel much confident about my purchase now, as it can be considerably difficult (lazy shipment policies and options for import/exportation in Brazil) to return it back to China, to request a full refund or to buy a new one after waiting for delivery. You know, I would have bought a powerful laptop. I usually work with light programming, animation on Windows and customisation on Linux and it would be ideal for me not to worry about performance. However, high-end PC’s are pretty expensive, and I don’t have the budget for that right now. I’m a scholar, so a stable machine with a great build and modest specs will do for now. Please, keep us updated about this brand and tips for better performance. Have a great day.

  6. Chris, have you tried to upgrade its processor? I have an Intel i5 pc that is too physically damaged for me to use it, so I would switch its processor to the new BMAX X14 is that”s makes sense… I know that might sound crazy, but please don’t judge me lol

    • Hi, it cannot be upgraded as it’s soldered onto the motherboard. Also not an LGA1151 socket or anything similar.

  7. Chris,
First of all, you’ve got a great channel (I love your sarcasm and disappointment for laptops’ lack of bass and loudness as well as the BMAX transformer logo). Second, I have just ordered the BMAX X14. Haven’t seen much about on the internet but enough to grasp on its features and specs. I’d love to see you talking about it on your channel with a full review . I was kinda worried, because the brand is not widely known and there is a void of information about this brand on YouTube. Please, share your experiences with as soon as you get your hands on it and I will do the same by sharing my perspective of it when it arrives.

    • Thanks for watching my videos. Yes, the X14 I have ordered from Banggood hasn’t shipped but hopefully this week and then about 2 weeks for it to arrive. I used EU priority shipping, not DHL this time again. I also have the Y11 it’s a good solid little portable laptop, dual-channel 8GB again. Decent speed, but poor battery life due to the smaller size.

This Y13 is one of my favorite laptops yet! I haven’t stopped using it since I got it and will sell my Aerobook and use this instead as my secondary PC. Not powerful, but the battery last for 8 hours, great keyboard, good touchpad, and a decent touch screen. BMAX is now one of my brands to watch, I like what they are doing. Using the same ODM as Teclast or Chuwi but with a few of their own tweaks.

  8. The disk operating light is physically there, next to the operating blue light… If you go into the bios and turn off fast boot, the light starts working. 🙂

  9. So mine finally arrived, very happy with that one. The store I bought from very responsive. Over all the tablet is nice, a couple of points to mention: looking for a glass protector, would be great to get a glass protector for it, the soft protector I got had bubbles beneath an I removed it. the keyboard top is plastic and over all not looking as sturdy as it should be. The display is IPS, viewing angles are very good, but the color reproduction is washed up, as well the screen is quite bright, low setting still too bright to watch at night. The keyboard is silver co not so easy to identify keys, thou the backlit helps. Space bar has issues to register fine touch on the outer edges of its size. The track pat is OK. Still over all for the money a really good piece. That is if it will not break, will keep you updated as I use it. If I would have to pick just one thing I would love to have its the glass screen protector even sold separate.

  10. Just got my BMAX…beautiful picture, deep colors and contrast, and great build quality.

BUT, my disk operating light doesn’t work. I had to reset windows for another problem and during the process the light stated working. But then after Windows reset, the light stopped working again.

Anyone have this computer? Does the Disk Light work?

    • There is no disk status light on this. The LEDs on the top left above the keyboard and caps lock, number and sroll I think.

  11. Yes, they do have a good English on their messages, thou I must say mine has still not shipped, they respond to me within a hour when I ask but so far, the status is since days “ready to be picked up” so not sure how long that will take… thou at the same time a Chuwi air that I ordered as well is in the same status, with Chuwi not even reading messages for days… will keep you updated how it developes, I do hope I get mine soon

  12. Ordered myself an bmax y13 from LNMBBS Official Store on Aliexpress like Daniel did found a good price, also the seller has really good english was chatting with him for an hour about the declaration costs lets hope its worth the wait.

  13. Just wanted to let you know I ordered mine today, added expedited DHL shipping, used some LNMBBS Official Store on Aliexpress since this shop was around 30 bugs cheaper than another store. Will see how fast I can get it. One thing I want to check in particular is that one of the USB C’s shoudl be a full power and data, so my expecation is it could trough a hub get power and connect to external monitor, will let you know once I will be able to test 🙂

  14. Thanks Chris, in your opinion which one is the best between bmax y11 and teclast f5r?

  15. Hi all, does the 11″ version have the same technical characteristics as the 13″ version?

    • Yes but a smaller 26Wh battery and the keyboard isn’t backlit making it a bit harder to see. However, for a portable machine, the size is great and about 1 kilo in weight.

  16. The M.2 drive on this laptop can be upgraded to 1TB (2240)…!!!! Good!

  17. full spec 3.1 means one of the usb-C can be used to charge the laptop with a usb-pd charger?

    • Yes, it should. I’ll test it when I get hold of mine it sadly didn’t ship before their holidays. So will be at least 2 weeks before I have it.

  18. I ordered the BMAX 13.3 …yesterday, and it was shipped right away! No problems!

    • I see why mine was shipped so soon….I am in the USA and It was dropped shipped from Canada!!!

  19. Hi Chris,
the Y11 is a good laptop, it’s about the same thing as the Teclast F5, but with the keycaps not so well visible.
It has a replaceable 256 GB SSD.
The battery life is not so good and there are no full size USB ports.
The Y13 will have a larger screen and the backlight keyboard, but also NO full size USB ports and who-knows about the battery life. (there are currently no specifications for the battery on the BMax site)
At the moment, I’m still undecided if to retain the Y11 or sell it and buy the Y13.

  20. Oh yeah the Chinese holidays, I have been waiting for an amplifier.
I am French, any ideas for AZERTY stickers that would blend in with the keyboard?

  21. Chris, looking forward to your review, since what is so far on the internet is rather a commercial than a full fledged review

  22. There is a review of the y11 on YouTube. A part of the webcam, it looks like a great device. The y13 seems to be a y11 with a 13 inch screen and back-light keyboard. I think I am going to give it a try as I only need a laptop for video, surfing and point and click games.

    • I hope to have mine soon to review. But looks like it hasn’t shipped out in time and the Chinese are now out for Holidays. And the Y11 if it’s like the Teclast F5 is a good little portable laptop, two weakness. Ports, no full-sized USB port and the battery life only around 5 hours max.

  23. Anyone know what is the largest M.2 upgrade drive this can take.

    • If it’s 22mm x 42mm in size it’s 512GB max. But if it does the 2280 size then 2TB.

  24. The Y13.3 is listed on gearbest, not sure what would happen if actually ordered, I personally would tend a lot for my self to get he 13.3 with backlit keyboard, rather than the 11Y, well guess I have to wait till people either get hands on it and review, or if its a stupid fake, would be a shame thou I love the concept for that price

  25. are the usb-C port both 3.1 ?

no more 3:2 aspect ratio notebook coming from China?!?!?!

    • One is full spec 3.1 the other just USB 3.0 according to the specs. I’ll test it out when I get it in a few weeks from China.

  26. Hi Chris,
the Y11 model does NOT have backlight keyboard, so the unhappy silver/white combination of the keys is very hardly usable in normal light conditions.
Hopefully, the Y13 model will solve this problem with the backlight, but Y11 users (like me) are not so happy of this thing (my Y11 has no more than two weeks!).

    • Apart from that keycap color issue, it’s good, right? Like the Tecalst F5 so a 27Wh or 29Wh battery so you’ll get about 5-6 hours tops it’s weakness. I’m considering reviewing it if I can get a discount on one to review it for Banggood that’s selling it. It fits in with what this sites about. And really I miss my Teclast F5 for its size, I use to watch a lot of videos on it and use it as a tablet for just surfing the internet.

  27. On BMAX site, produt specs “13.3-inch 1920×1080 IPS LCD with Full Lamination Technology and Ultra-narrow Bezel”
    http://www.bmaxit.com/2019/laptops_0924/12.html

    • Great! Thanks for the link so this is good news a fully laminated screen.

  28. It seems they’re selling the 11 inch version but not the 13 inch (probably fake pictures). Also, those bezels in the images are clearly a lie as the bottom bezel is gigantic.

  29. I’ve got the F5 (non-R) myself, and while I rather like it and the balance it strikes between performance and convenience, I’m not sure I would be able to put up with a 13″ version. That size/footprint moves into “proper” laptop territory, where you should really have a Core i chip, at the v least a Y-series one – the oft-sluggish (even opening up the throttle with cTDP-up to ~11W, iirc) N4100 just can’t compete.

Looking at the *other* big weakness of the F5 – I’m not sure I trust these Chinese OEMs to put some semblance of a proper battery into these units. A manufacturer-own claim of 8 hours doesn’t sound particularly good, with how inflated those always are.

Not Chris, but personally? I’d say nah. (Especially since there’s no undervolting support for the N4100 in sight).

    • Yes well the F5 if you saw my review got a bad rating under battery life. It’s I think 26Wh instead of the typical 37Wh we get with the Gemini Lake laptops so it’s only 5 hours really so yes falls short.

Core M3-8100Y would be great in this however the price would no doubt be close to $500. I’ll get it and see how it goes, test it out and hopefully, the Y13 isn’t a lemon.

  30. Just to clarify things, the Y11 has a beautiful fully laminated screen, but not the backlight keyboard,
The Y13 is supposed to have a NOT fully laminated screen, but it comes with a backlight keyboard.
Other differences between the two (different ports, different screen size) are secondary to me.
P.S. I can confirm that my Y11 has 8 GB of dual channel LPDDR4 RAM. ?
(please delete my previous, similar post, because I made a mistake)

  31. Hello there,
I’ve got my BMax Y11 about 2 weeks ago (I’m one of the early buyers).
I feel generally ok with it, it’s about the same laptop as the Teclast F5, but with a few differences:
    – 256 GB of real replaceable M.2 2242 SSD
    – mine has a full Windows 10 Pro license in the BIOS (it retains it even reinstalling the latest OS from the scratch!)
There’s only one thing I don’t like: the colors used for the keyboard (grey background and white letters) make the keys not so well visible under all light conditions. The standard black/white combination is so much better, in my opinion.
I think the BMax Y13 is in preorder now, it’s not a fake product. I’ve seen that this one had backlight keyboard, which is a good one, but probably the bigger screen is not fully laminated, which is not good.
Seen that, I am still undecided if to retain the Y11 of sell it and buy the Y13 (the keyboard colors problem is not acceptable for me, and is difficult to correct with the stickers in a good way).
Please tell me your opinion and keep up the good work, Chris! 🙂

    • Thanks for the info. Yes, the silver keys and the white backlit keys isn’t a good combination for visibility. I’m looking forward to testing this one out and see how it goes. Maybe pick up the Y11 if it’s okay.

  32. They also launched one month ago the BMX Y11, a smaller 11″ brother.

  33. eh sorry, their not really selling it. Fake shite.

    • Okay I removed it. Since it’s not really selling it and fake looking scam site maybe?
